Preparation for trip
To join this trip you will need to
• complete a reservation form for JOURNEYS. You may do so online.
• arrange international air travel to Mongolia. (JOURNEYS can help).
• possess a passport must be valid for 6 months from date of entry into Mongolia.
Getting to Mongolia
Participants may travel independently to arrive in Ulaan Baatar on or before July 1st. Most travelers will fly via Beijing or Seoul with a connecting flight directly to Ulaan Baatar. The JOURNEYS staff will recommend specific flights and provide assistance upon request. You do not require a visa in advance if you are a US citizen. Visas may be required for transit through China, however.
Trip leadership
Throughout the trip you will be led by English-speaking Mongolian expert guides. We will have more details on the specific leaders as the trips departure date approaches.
What to expect on the trip
You will be traveling through rough terrain and sleeping many nights in local-style ger accommodations, using Ulaan Baatar as a hub. A ger is a traditional Mongolian home, made of wooden supports covered in felt and decorative cloth; each ger is typically one circular room with beds accommodating four to six guests. Your hotel in Ulaan Baatar will have full conveniences including internet access, direct dial phone lines and other modern amenities. Satellite phones may be available at some camps. Our planned itinerary utilizes local flights to cover the longest distances, but we will still travel extensively in 4x4 vehicles. It is likely that daytime temperatures on some days will be over 90 degrees F. The average temperature at this time of year in Ulaan Baatar is 63 degrees F. You can expect extensive contact with local people, excellent photography, opportunities to observe and study local wildlife and chances to explore natural environments on foot. Due to limitations of transportation, participants should pack light, confining travel luggage to no more than 15 kgs/33 lbs. A reserve bag may be left behind in Ulaan Baatar.
What you will need on the trip:
A complete checklist will be provided. We suggest a very light sleeping bag, good sun protection, digital camera, binoculars, lightweight hiking shoes and quick dry clothing. Though the climate is generally dry, July is the wettest month in Ulaan Baatar. Bring light rain gear. No immunizations are required. Neither yellow fever nor malaria occur in Mongolia. Hepatitis A immunization is recommended.
